Working with early synthesizers and splicing together seemingly unconnected reels of tape, Volt? where influenced by bands like Popol Vuh, Cluster and Neu! create a droning, pulsating sound with minimalist melodies and lock-groove rhythms. Viewed as a group which was ahead of its time they where said to be an influence on both Stereolab and Tortoise. Stereolab's Tim Gane acknowledged as much in an interview with Select magazine where he noted '' Volt? really took the Motorik tambourine sound to a different level, i don't think we'd be here without them''.

Their debut album 'Ac- reflux' showcased Volt?'s early sound featuring sliced samples from local radio and collaged fragments of noise. At a famous gig in the Belfast Art College Volt? premiered their audio-visual show 'Super 8 /1/2' which utilized 128 super 8 projectors. The biggest light show in Northern Ireland since ELO's visit in 1978.

By 1989 Volt? had developed their sound into ethnic fusion with a political conscious .Volt? sought to incorporate traditional ethnic folk musics into contemporary electronic music. Their second album 'Lough Swilly senses' showed the influence of Deep Forest, Engima and Clannad on their work featuring samples of the haunting voices of the Pygmies, Jackie Fullerton commentary and birdsong.
